DIARY IDEA: WEEK FIVE

Starting to get a sense of productive routine, something all consultants and freelancers that I’ve spoken to advise.

I need good routines and work discipline to avoid the dreaded SIBSPX syndrome: Sitting In Boxer Shorts Playing Xbox.

No time for that this week thankfully.

I make sure there are at least 2 meetings a day, unless there is a creative deadline to meet. This week I had no unkind deadlines. I met with the biggest client I dealt with last year and got re-engaged to work on a retainer for the next year! This is great news for my wallet. Part of the deal is I have to stay at their office a day a week. Not too punishing, I can handle an office one day a week. In fact I’m looking forward to it, the people who work there are fantastic.

Met a games developer who I could have listened to all day. I also met the chap behind the drug names Viagra and Prozac. Naming is my secret passion. I could devote the rest of my professional career to this part of brand communication. I think I may have talked the poor bloke’s ear off in my excitement.

Skillshare,I’ve already written about. It was an inspiring experience, I highly recommend you look into it.

I’ve had two potential clients ask me to work for free and with a few days turn around. I even heard, “it will be a good portfolio piece.” Please. I’m 40. I have well over a decade of global branding experience, won tons a awards and sold ideas that have generated millions of dollars in media value and product sales for clients. I do not need to work for free on a portfolio piece.

Now that I don’t have my ex partner Mark to stop me being extremely rude in response to such requests, I have to rely on my own deep breathing exercises.

I was going to add a line to my email signature, “Please do not ask for credit as being told to fuck off often offends.” I actually saw this sign in a corner shop in Newcastle once. Perhaps a little abrasive :)

As I’ve had a decent week I’m going to bunk off and watch the England game later. Come on England!
