This is the new name and logo for my online video workshop.

It was previously called, “Free Thinking For Sale”. It didn’t get as much traction as I wished although those who took the course gave it the full 5-star score and glowing reviews.

I know the content is good. In my time, I’ve attended endless marketing seminars, talks, workshops, books, conferences - I know the competition well and this workshop stands strong against any of them.

I’ve probable worked on more Guerrilla Marketing briefs than any other Creative Director, students couldn’t be in better hands.

This is not a boast, just a tragic admission to how long I’ve been doing this :)

The issue I had with the old name and logo was two-fold:

1. ”Free Thinking For Sale as a name was trying to be too clever.

The course lives online via two different platforms (UDEMY and Skillshare). People need to know exactly what they are getting in as little time as possible.

2. The Price. I was aiming for $50. I took a look at the other courses and $99 - $300 seemed normal but these courses were long.

I want my course to be much shorter but packed with goodies - useful information you can use immediately. No filler or waffle, bullshit or other people’s content.

My course is a life’s work - personal case studies and insights, one-on-one briefing and critiquing. It’s a unique perspective on commercial creativity.

I’d rather sell more at a low price than a little bit at a higher price.

The new price is $23 and offers a great deal of value.

I’m adding some new content and will have the new workshop up online soon. Stay tuned!

The course can also take place “live” in office situations - half or full day.

GOOD IDEA.

When I was a teen I wondered what kind of youth behaviour would irritate my older self.

By the late 80’s I’d seen the tail end of punks and skins (violence and glue-sniffing), new romantics (dangerous amounts of Boots hairspray), shoe-gazers (m&s cardigans, long winkle picker shoes), goth/industrial (piercing), football casuals (pink shirts and violence), rave (e and Fluro wear), b-boy (baggy pants, writing on walls with paint). All of these youth tribes offered something to irritate the elders.

Now there is a universal youth behaviour, one that unites them all: ubiquitous and non-stop texting and fiddling with phones.

Recently, I’ve noticed it reaching new heights of social rudeness of late. Also noticed how much more it’s making me vexed. I’m practically shaking my fist at people these days….

Saw this bumper sticker and nodded on agreement.

Had an impromptu meeting with Michael Romanowicz today. We worked together at Cunning NY and bump into each other in the ‘hood.

Great catch up. Being able to take last-minute random meetings are a nice side effect of being your own boss.

52 OFFICES IDEA PART 9:

Returned to the beautiful grounds of Brooklyn’s PRATT Institute of art and design.

It’s always refreshing to be amongst the grass, trees flowers and inspiring sculptures of the Institute’s grounds.

500 23 years old women in summer clothing doesn’t hurt the eyes either. However, I’m a father and a pillar of the community, I mention this for journalistic purposes only.

Moving on…

I spent two days this week at the Mirren Conference. Some big name speakers and a few decent sessions.

The venue was fowl though. I’m perplexed at corporate America’s insistence on housing offices and conferences in such inhuman places.

America is a beautiful country and yet businesses seem hell bent on keeping it as far away as possible or destroying and perverting it when it has to deal with it.

Why not have a conference in Prospect Park? A roof? anywhere other than these nasty carpeted, beige walled, strip lit, windowless, soulless venues? They’re hella expensive too…

I spotted it being walked by a normal sized woman on my way to the Mirren Conference In Wall Street today. I was desperate to pet it but was in a hurry.

It’s literally the largest dog I’ve ever seen. Totally worthy of a blog post I’d say.

COMPETITION WINNING IDEA:

I have to be honest, I’m not a fan of business conferences (PSFK being a notable exception).

I always feel awkward in set up networking environments. Even though I have the Best Business Cards in New York (TM), walking around a strip lit room handing them to strangers never comes easy to me.

Of course, as a sole business owner, it’s exactly what I should be doing at any given moment but I’m a bit contrary - a plus and a negative when it comes to such things as new business generation. I’d prefer to make a 3D head resume than try and condense my life’s work to an elevator pitch.

Still. I managed to secure a free ticket to the Mirren New Business Conference on Wall Street. Very hard to turn down a ticket works $1,600. Some of their speakers are fantastic. I only managed to catch one yesterday, Gareth Kay from Goodby. Man spoke the truth.

I’d been to the 2008 conference when I was Creative Director of Cunning NY, where I accidentally volunteered to be a part of the pitch battle. The pitch battle is where two random teams of four are gleaned from the audience of 400 people, given a brief and then have four hours to develop a pitch. The teams then pitch on stage in front of the audience, real clients and search consultants.

It’s nerve wracking. I like it.

I volunteered again this year under the guise of my own name. I’m kicking myself for not going under my “World’s Fastest Agency” guise. In truth, I was afraid of failure. I should have had more faith - we won!

The pitch was for a fictional Axe deodorant for single men aged 65+. Really fun challenge.

The prize is general kudos in front of a bunch of potential clients but also a swanky lunch with a big wig search consultant. I’m going to get a massive doggy bag :)

SCULPTURE IDEA:

Dozens of spades set out in a circle and mounted to a wall at PRATT College.

Yes, it’s called PRATT my giggling English friends. I have to bite my fist every time I see students wearing the branded hoodies.

Great sculpture garden though, open to the public and well worth a visit if you’re in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
